U14 Race

ABOUT

The U14 Race program is for youth aged 12-13 (as at Dec. 31, 2024) who want to improve their cross-country skiing skills, participate in a series of races and enjoy the outdoors in winter. Athletes follow the ‘Learn to Train’ stage of the Long-Term Athlete Development model.

The program consists of two parts: i) dry-land training and ii) ski sessions.

Dry-land sessions

The athletes expand their knowledge and skills as they pursue a higher level of fitness, increased strength and speed, and greater endurance. We introduce ‘roller skiing’ as part of our shoulder season training toolkit. Other activities include trail running, ski bounding, strength and mobility.

Ski sessions

The on-snow sessions are designed to improve technique, develop endurance and prepare skiers for competitions. Racing abilities will be fine-tuned. Skiers are grouped based on age and ability so we can ensure they progress at their own pace while also creating the best possible group dynamic.

Races

Skiers are prepared for and encouraged to participate in a series of regional races. Events include the Candy Cane Cup, Coupe Skinouk, Easterns and the big highlight, the ‘Norams’ race weekend away. The goal for the athletes is to demonstrate determination, dedication and a positive attitude while having fun. We want them to learn and grow from their competitive experiences.

Exchange Program

The U14 Race program participates in a cultural/sports exchange every other year with a group from Canmore, Alberta. We are planning an exchange for the 2024-25 season.

FAQ

  • Your child should have completed the U12 Race or the U12 Adventure Rabbits program. Or, they should have completed Jackrabbit level 3 or 4; and have developed basic classic and skate skiing technique. They should be comfortable skiing 10-15km.

If not, please register your child in our Youth learn to ski program. For questions about program choice, please contact us.

  • The program starts September 12 and finishes mid-end March (dependent on snow coverage). There are three sessions per week: Tuesdays 6:30-8:00pm, Thursdays 6:30-8:00pm and Saturdays 9:00-11:00am. The majority of sessions take place in the Gatineau Park.

  • Parent volunteers lead the sessions, helped by our amazing youth coaches. Parents will be fully supported by our Head Coach, Moe Samm and his team.

Please contact us if you are interested in being a Race coach. It is a great way to get involved with the club and highly rewarding.

  • Dry-land: active wear, waterproof jacket, fanny pack, headlamp, running shoes, roller skis, bike helmet, gloves, old ski poles (armpit length).

On-snow: skis, poles and boots appropriate for their height, weight and skill level. We strongly recommended that participants have equipment for both classic and skate skiing.

We will discuss ski equipment during our parent meeting, for those who need help and advice.

  • The cost for the 2024-25 fall/winter season is $507.50

Additionally, all registrants must be affiliated with the Division/Nordiq Canada ($32.00) and purchase a Family or Individual Chelsea Nordiq Club Membership.
