U10 Race

ABOUT

The U10 Race program is for children aged 8-9 (as at Dec. 31, 2023) who want to be physically active, improve their ski skills, enjoy the outdoors and participate in local ski races.

The program consists of two parts: i) dry-land activities and ii) ski sessions

Dry-land sessions

We introduce ideas and activities that help children develop strength, power and endurance in a fun, social environment. Activities include running games, hiking, strength training using bodyweight, stretching, orienteering, relays, fitness stations, scavenger hunts, geocaching, etc.

Ski sessions

The on-snow sessions offer a range of ski experiences as the young athletes develop their proficiency to a level that will enable them to enjoy pursuing this physically demanding sport. Activities include classic and skate skiing, games, relays, and technique sessions. Highlights include the Chelsea Sprints and the Cookie Beiner.

Races

Starting in mid-January skiers will participate in a series of youth-focused xc ski races to test their improved ski-specific skills and fitness. At this age level, the main goal is for the children to develop their skiing technical ability in a fun, active, supportive environment so that they enjoy skiing and feel empowered when doing it.

FAQ

  • Your child should have completed Jackrabbit level 3 or 4; and have developed basic classic and skate skiing technique. If not, your child should register in our Jackrabbit program.

  • The program starts Thursday September 21 and finishes mid-end March (dependent on snow coverage). There are two sessions per week: Thursdays 6:30-8:00pm and Saturdays 9:00-11:00am. The majority of sessions take place in the Gatineau Park.

  • Parent volunteers lead the sessions, helped by our amazing youth coaches. Parents will be fully supported by our Head Coach, Moe Samm and his team.

Please contact us if you are interested in being a Race coach. It is a great way to get involved with the club and highly rewarding.

  • Dry-land: active wear, waterproof jacket, fanny pack, headlamp, running shoes

On-snow: skis, poles and boots appropriate for their height, weight and skill level. It is recommended that participants have equipment for both classic and skate skiing.

We will discuss ski equipment during our parent meeting, for those who need help and advice.
